What is rhinoplasty?
In its most simple sense, rhinoplasty
(often called nose surgery or a nose job) is the procedure of permanently
altering the size and shape of the nose by using cosmetic surgery. Each
operation involves removing or reshaping bone and cartilage to produce
the most harmonious and attractive nose for the patient’s face. There
are some rhinoplasty surgeries that are carried out for medical purposes.
Known as functional rhinoplasty, these treatments can open up blocked
or twisted nasal passages or repair a damaged septum.
Most rhinoplasty surgeries
are carried out for a combination of cosmetic and functional purposes.
Surgery is carried out with the patient under a general anaesthesia
(occasionally semi-conscious anaesthesia depending on the severity of
the surgery) and involves a light to medium degree of post-surgical
pain. In most cases the patient will be back at work within seven to
ten days after surgery and can resume physical activity after a month.
Rhnioplasty surgery can make
an incredible difference to the appearance of the patient but in reality
there is a limit to what can be achieved with nose surgery. Your cosmetic
practitioner will tell you that they can only achieve what looks natural
with the rest of your face. It is not simply a question of choosing
the nose you want. Most patients understand this but it is important
to remember early on. Likewise it is important to remember that surgery
will only take place if you are physically and mentally well. This will
involve not smoking or taking any medication for at least two weeks
before surgery.
Rhinoplasty involves the very
skilful removal of tissue and cartilage that takes years to learn and
master. Because the amount of tissue being dealt with so small and the
margin of correction so slight, rhinoplasty surgery is often considered
one of the most difficult cosmetic surgeries to perform. But is also
one of the most effective if performed correctly.
Rhinoplasty, like all cosmetic
procedures like dermal fillers or tooth whitening guide, is ultimately about
making the patient happy and more comfortable with himself or herself.
